Let me tell you a tale. A tale of five heroes, all on a crusade to bring their vision to the masses. The day of this groundbreaking journey would be a day of laughter, betrayal, and celebration. Hearts would be broken; bonds of friendship tested; and respect would be gained. Today is the anniversary of that day. And this is their story.
It started out early morning, one year ago, on Saturday 17th September, 2005. The troop consisted of three veterans: HongKong, Browny, & Chops; and two apprentices, Jay & Dingo. The group left the township of Palmerston North around 8am, with the first drink being consumed shortly thereafter. The first stop was in Levin. It was a short one - only enough time for a photo and another drink. Once back on the road there was only one other stop - Wellington, the final destination.
The trip wasn’t that eventful, but the sobriety of the crusaders was slowly losing its grip on them. Once in the city of Wellington, a state of euphoria came over some of them, almost losing control. Strange noises emanated from their throats through their mouths and were inflicted on passers by. Everyone’s level of adrenaline was rising higher as the location of the great encounter was upon them. The sun was further strengthening its grip on the sky, releasing its vast energy as the crusaders rallied themselves. Donning their battle suits, the heroes advanced on the gate to the coliseum.
Four of the five crusaders had brought the popular choice of elixir, Death Mix. This concoction was known to many, but only drunk by a few worthy individuals. The fifth individual was responsible for the navigation of the mighty steed, the Palooza Wagon. Inside the arena the crew erected their banner in support of their local contingent, the CD Cobras. The war cry read, “CD Cobras slither like you’re supposed to”. This was to provide much courage to the mighty Cobras.
With the heroes of the story now in full cheer, they continued on with their grand scheme, the belittlement of those who stood in their way. Many insults were hurled towards the force opposing the Cobras, and roaring laughter was bellowed at their foes. Of course the crusaders also provide support to their troops, usually with cheers, but more often with witty insights. At one point the match almost turned into a full scale battle, but with a timely intervention the contest resumed. By the end of the allotted time, the battle was lost. But the war was still being fought. With our heroes now producing some brilliant moments for all to witness the war was going to be over before the day was done. And our crusaders would be victorious.
The group passed around flyers for their next meeting. This was to provide much entertainment for onlookers and receivers. The crew had created such a spectacle now that the peasants knew to keep their distance. Only the worthy were allowed near and only the brave approached. The Cobra warriors, though scarred, received many praises and heckles for their efforts on the battlefield. The next group warriors for the five kings to support were now close to their engagement, so they set up camp ready for the exhibition.
The match was over before it began. Without much resistance the kings had let loose a barrage on the opposition and completely demoralised them. Despite a late rally from the enemy, the five khans had succeeded in their mission. With a renewed passion for their cause, and with a gained respect from all they came in contact with, they left the arena in great spirit. The journey home lasted what seemed like minutes, the state of intoxication providing this time warped experience. Upon reaching their homeland the five departed ways, expecting to meet up later for celebratory ales at the local inn, the Fitz.
This was not to be however. Only two of the group made it there - the eldest, HongKong and the newest, Dingo. The other pledger, Jay, was seen around the streets early the following morning. The last two, Browny and Chops, had what is now known as the great altercation, where one was betrayed and some outsiders hearts were broken. This resulted in a rift between the two and Chops was demoted from his rank in the Palooza group, almost being pushed out of the dynasty that is Palooza.
The day may have ended in tragedy for some, but for others it was a rebirth for the Palooza crew. No longer shackled with obscurity, its rise amongst the other great empires was secured. Now wherever and whenever the word Palooza is mentioned, knowledge of its mighty history is sought.
